thank you sir. I also worry about the decrease of heads. I think the fact that the dead seems so hard to comprehend, most are deterred. Even my deadhead buddies dont get dark star or the early stuff. Its a whole new ball park (for my first 5 years of dead listening i was mostly 80s and thought early 70s and especially 60s were lack luster; oh how wrong i was). The big thing I think, is that these amazing moments in music need to be listened to a few times before they can be fully grasped, so most hear it and forget it. I recall listening to my first dark star and considering it an accomplishment to have listened to the whole thing. I didnt find it amazing at all, i now really love that dark star (DP 2). Also, any of those peeps that are into the scene (which i am not) tend to prefer concerts, drugs and techno (yet where dead t-shirts). Idk but i hope we arent a dying breed, and i really hope my kids will like the dead.

thats my babble and 1 cent due to inflation, or is it 3 cents?

re: hoping your kids like the dead -- don't worry, it's easy!
Just start them out listening from birth. and they'll have those 10,000 hours it supposedly takes to become an expert in anything under their belts before you know it -- to the point where my 10 and 13 year old kids sing weird-Al style parodies. Most recent -- St. Stephen starts up and they young one sings right on cue: hey mom, I hate this song, whenever it plays I feel so wrong!
Now my big problem is that they want to go to a show (Furthur, DSO, 7 Walkers) and as you mentioned there is A LOT about the scene at shows that is totally all wrong for impressionable young minds.
